LOVE, FORGIVENESS AND JUSTICE

J. Kingston Cowart

True love loves mercy and begins with forgiveness.

When other people cause us problems, we must not think that we can wait until we overcome our feelings about what they have done to us before we forgive them.

It is only in forgiving that we truly overcome.

Yet true love also loves justice—and justice knows limits.

We dare not allow relationships (either at work or at home) to continue when our forgiveness is repeatedly abused.

We must either change those relationships or end them.

We do not always have the power to change them—but we always have the power to end them, one way or another.

There is neither true love for others, nor any justice at all, in allowing anyone to repeatedly abuse the love that is forgiveness.

Changing that often changes everything for the better—for everyone involved.
